Unit Plan Title: The Story of the Wise Old Woman Unit Summary:
The students will read a story and use the plot structure to complete the components needed. The student will also take the information gathered from the story and create a newsletter for the villagers in the small Japanese town as well as those older villagers who had to relocate to the mountains.
Curriculum Framing Questions:
When reading the story, what do you think it would take for the people (characters) to be happy?
How do you determine what the plot, setting and mood is when reading a story?
After reading the assigned story, list the five most important events in sequential order.
Summative Assessment: There are a variety of assessments provided for all types of learners, such as: K-W-L charts, definition pages, and hands-on projects. He student will have a chance to create an example of their own. Students may also conference with peers on ways to do things and/or share ideas to check work before turning in the final project. The pre-writing before and after the reading, along with questions in the story review and at the end will show what the students has learned from his/her readings. Student sample:
